Wellness riad nahla: A Moroccan oasis of tranquility and tradition

Nestled in the heart of Marrakech, Wellness Riad Nahla stands as a unique sanctuary where Moroccan heritage meets Zen-inspired serenity. This extraordinary retreat offers guests an immersive experience, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern wellness practices, including sound healing sessions that promise deep relaxation and rejuvenation.

A vision born from passion

For Mireille Vogelsang, the journey to creating Wellness Riad Nahla began with a single photograph. “When I saw a picture of this riad, I couldn’t sleep for a week,” she recalls. “I told my husband, ‘I need to buy this place.’ It wasn’t just a house—it felt like it had a special energy.”

Originally from the Netherlands, Mireille had lived in seven countries before settling in Morocco. Though she had never visited the country before, the riad’s allure was undeniable. “I flew to Marrakech, and it confirmed everything. This was my place,” she says.

A space steeped in history and energy

The riad, once owned by a figure connected to the historic Bahia Palace, exuded a distinct “female energy” that resonated deeply with Mireille. However, the property required significant work. Purchased during the COVID-19 pandemic, the riad was burglarized before Mireille could even set foot inside. “They stole everything,” she explains.

Undeterred, Mireille embarked on a three-and-a-half-year renovation project. Drawing on her background as an interior designer, she reimagined the space, blending Moroccan artistry with a minimalist Zen aesthetic. “Every room had bold colors—reds, greens, and blues,” she says. “But for meditation and wellness, you need calm. I neutralized everything to create peace.”

Preserving Moroccan craftsmanship

Mireille’s commitment to honoring Moroccan traditions was evident in her choice of materials and artisans. She sought out local craftsmen, many of whom were in their 80s and 90s, to restore the riad using handmade plaster, tiles, and woodwork. “It’s sad to see that craftsmanship in Morocco is disappearing,” she notes. “The younger generation doesn’t want to do this.”

Despite challenges, including delays and dishonest contractors, Mireille remained steadfast. “I knew what I wanted,” she says. The result is a breathtaking space that seamlessly marries tradition and tranquility.

A sanctuary for healing

Today, Wellness Riad Nahla offers more than just a place to unwind. Mireille, a trained practitioner in sound healing, breathwork, and Ayurveda, curates transformative experiences for her guests. “My own healing journey started in 2015,” she shares. “I did my first sound journey in Bangkok, and it changed my life. I felt I needed to share that with others.”

At Nahla, visitors can immerse themselves in sound journeys featuring Tibetan bowls, gongs, and crystal bowls. “Sound meditation is perfect for people who struggle to sit still,” Mireille explains. “You just lie down and let the vibrations work. It’s like meditating for hours or getting deep sleep.”

A name with meaning

The name “Nahla” was carefully chosen to reflect the riad’s essence. “It means ‘bee’ in Arabic,” Mireille says. “Bees are essential to life. Without them, we couldn’t survive. That’s how I see this place—it’s essential for balance and wellness.”

A dream realized

Reflecting on her journey, Mireille describes the riad as “transformative, Zen, and flow.” Despite the challenges, she feels she has created something truly special. “It’s everything I dreamed it would be,” she says.

Wellness Riad Nahla is more than a retreat—it’s a testament to the power of vision, perseverance, and the harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. For those seeking a unique escape, this Moroccan oasis offers a transformative experience unlike any other.
